Competition and Travel Award
Background information for graduate students
The Graduate Student Symposium is one of the focal points of our Annual Meeting. Graduate student from each of the major Chicago area institutions will compete for a cash prize and a nomination for the Chapter’s Graduate Student Travel Award . This year, since the next National SfN meeting is hosted in Chicago, no nomination will be made to the parent society for the travel award.
How: Each major institution in the Chicago area will select a graduate student to compete. Contact CSfN’s councilors associated to your institution for information about for information about how this selection is made at your University.
If you are selected, you will be included in the Graduate Student Symposium and your registration fee for the event will be waived.
Format: Each student will give a 10 min presentation followed by 5 min discussion.

Nomination for Travel Award
Traditionally the winner of this competition will be nominated for the Chapter’s Graduate Student Travel Award granted by SfN headquarters. To be eligible for this award, nominees should meet the following criteria:
• The nominee must be the first author of an abstract to be presented at the annual meeting.
• The abstract must be of the highest scientific merit.
• The nominee need not be a member of SfN, but his or her advisor must be.
• The nominee must be a graduate student who has advanced to candidacy for a PhD.
• Only one applicant from a given laboratory may be considered by a chapter in any given calendar year.
• No member of the laboratory from which the nominee is chosen should have been the recipient of an SfN travel award the previous year.
• The nominee may not be a recipient of another SfN travel award in the same year.
Background information for Postdoctoral fellows.
Participate in our Postdoctoral Poster Competition and win cash prizes and a nomination for the Chapter’s Postdoctoral Trainee Travel Awards. This year since the next National SfN meeting is hosted in Chicago, no nomination will be made to the parent society for the travel award.
How: When registering, choose the option “postdoctoral level” on page two of the registration form. Please have ready a 250-word abstract in a Word file (.doc or .docx) to upload.
Where and when: Set-up your poster on March 26th, 2009 from 8:00 to 9:00 AM at DePaul University. Evaluation of the poster will take place at lunch time. Times will be assigned for you to be at the poster. Posters will be up all day.
Winners will be announced at the end of the meeting.

Participate in our Undergraduate Poster Competition and win cash prizes. Also your registration fee for the event will be waived. Please contact Dorothy Kozlowski before registering to receive instructions for obtaining waiver of your registration fee.
How: When registering , choose the option “undergraduate level” on page two of the registration form. Please have ready a 250-word abstract in a Word file (.doc or .docx) to upload and the name of your adviser.
